Travel Series: Blue Rain Cambodia

In late 12th Century, Mahayana Buddhist King Jayavarman VII built last of the Angkor Temples called Bayon. These smiling faces were representation of himself as Buddha. After him though temple was reverted immediately to Hinduism. Later on, it was reverted back to Buddhist temple again only this time it was Theravada branch of Buddhism.

Moss grows and dries every year on these faces, but the calm smile never fades. Jayavarman VII was the only Mahayana Buddhist king. Mahayana branch of Buddhism is as grand as its name. In a way king gave a unique path through these faces to know the ultimate truth. No matter what conditions come smile doesn’t change, it is not a sad or happy smile, it is just a serene smile. A smile which comes after realizing realty and standing in the subtle but evident drops of monsoon rain.
